Statement
I use
clay and mixed-media figurative sculpture to explore communal recognition and
responses to archetype and anima. I am, in a sense, telling stories, or perhaps
dreams. They are personal to me, but I strive to present them in a way that
conveys the underlying emotion to the viewer and translates them to his own
psyche and experiences. I relate this to theater: the experience of the
playwright becomes interpreted through those of his actors, and are then absorbed
and transmuted by the audience into a communal experience. One story is being
told, but it becomes hundreds of stories before the evening's over.
Thematically, I use varying degrees
of narrative from the specific story to the vaguely symbolic to explore the
human experience, and its effect on the world around us. My recurring themes
include memory, dreams, mythology, miscommunication, metaphorical traps and
cages, the choices that confront us every day, and the heroism that can exist
in the mundane. Politics and gender issues, as well as wordplay, are often
present.
By
using an emotional and heavily loaded visual language, and anchoring pieces
with small details, found objects, and occasionally text, I seek to create a
reality that connects people, that puts them into a moment of experience unique
to them, but shared by all in subtle variations. Elements of time, gesture,
surface, and irony work to draw people in, and translate my stories into their
own.
